Dr Ron Olson got into medicine a little late in life, having spent a few years as a ski instructor and children's camp director before getting his MD at the University of Calgary in Canada. He completed a family medicine residency at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, and worked at the student health and sports medicine clinic there before moving to Durham 11 years ago.
Dr. Olson has been involved in sports medicine from the start, having received certification in Canada in 1993, and has provided medical care at local and international events in several sports. He currently covers Duke club sports, with special attention to hockey, assists Duke Sports Medicine in coverage of local high school teams, does diving medical exams, and is one of the physicians who travels to Europe with the US Ski Team. He has been the physician for the US Team to the World Winter University Games in China, the World Summer University Games in Serbia, and will be a physician for the US Olympic Committee at the Paralympics in Vancouver/Whistler 2010.
Dr. Olson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Community and Family Medicine, and also the Department of Anesthesiology, were he is medical director of the Preoperative Screening Unit. He volunteers as medical director at Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abuse (TROSA) in Durham, and does sports medicine at Duke community clinics. He runs and plays hockey to stay in shape. His wife is also a physician at Duke. They have three teenage daughters.
