Availability of Plan B® at local retail pharmacies

As of August 2006, Plan  B® emergency contraceptive pills were approved for over-the-counter sales to individuals 18 years of age and older by hte Federal Drug Administration (FDA).  FDA regulations require that Plan B® only be sold over the counter at retail outlets that have a pharmacist on duty and that the medication must kept behind the pharmacy counter.  Individuals wishing to purchase Plan B® must request the item from the pharmacist and show an ID to verify they meet the age requirement.  Individuals under the age of 18 cannot purchase the product over the counter.  Therefore, women under the age of 18 must have a prescription to receive Plan B®.

The Duke Student Health Center provides Plan B® through its pharmacy.  However, when the Student Health Center is closed, students may wish to purchase Plan B® at one of the following local retail pharmacies.
