Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED), formerly called impotence, is a common problem affecting men of all ages.  ED is defined as the inability to maintain an adequate erection for satisfactory sexual activity.  While this issue is commonly associated with older men, typically > age 65, it is not unusual for young men to experience this problem, and, in fact, it is the most common complaint among young men seeking counseling about sexuality.

An occasional episode of ED is normal, happening to most men, and usually does not require medical consultation.  However, when ED becomes a more persistent problem, it can have a negative impact on a man’s self-image, and adversely affect his and his partner’s sexual life.  There are several causes of ED, both psychological and physical, and evaluation by a health care provider can to help determine whether a more extensive workup is required.  The good news is that for the majority of young men, psychological factors such as anxiety, stress, and fatigue are generally responsible.  Common physical causes include alcohol, recreational drugs, and some prescription medications.

Duke Student health is prepared to evaluate male students for ED, and, when needed, make referrals to specialists, such as Urologists.  Also, we frequently make referrals to mental health professionals at CAPS and locally who specialize in dealing with this sensitive issue.  If you would like to be seen for this common problem, you can make an appointment to see a provider at your convenience.  Most students with concerns about ED like to be seen in the Men’s Health Clinic—which is every Friday morning at the Student Health Clinic.  You may make an appointment online or call 681-WELL .
