HIV/AIDs Counseling and Testing

Location: Duke Student Health Center
Telephone: 681-WELL (9355)

There is one way to be tested at the Duke Student Health Center: Confidential blood testing. The Student Health Center does not provide anonymous testing because North Carolina state law dictates that anonymous HIV testing cannot be performed anywhere in the state.

The Duke Student Health Center is also a sponsor of the Know Your Status campaign, which provides rapid HIV testing in the Bryan Center on West Campus during the academic year.

Hours: HIV testing is done at the Duke Student Health Center by appointment only. Confidential testing is available M, T, Th, and F, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM, and Wednesdays, 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM.

Confidential Testing

Confidential testing is available at no charge to Duke students at the Duke Student Health Center (call 681-WELL to make an appointment). A small sample of blood is taken from the inside of your arm to perform this test. Confidential test results (both negative and positive) are recorded in your medical record, but they may be disclosed only with your written permission for insurance or employment screening. Positive results are reported to the State Department of Public Health as required by law.  People who need a copy of their HIV result for official papers (working papers, immigration, etc.) should receive confidential testing because it is the only way to receive a record of your results.

Know Your Status Campaign

The Duke Student Health Center is a sponsor of the Know Your Status campaign, which encourages students to be tested for HIV as a routine part of their regular medical care and provides free rapid HIV testing on a walk-in basis on West Campus during the academic year.

Know Your Status will be providing HIV testing on Mondays, starting September 7, 2009, and continuing through the end of the academic year, from 10 AM - 5 PM in the Bryan Center Meeting Room B.  Specific information about testing dates is available online here.

If you are interested in volunteering with the Know Your Status HIV testing campaign, please complete a volunteer application on the KYS website.

About Know Your Status testing:
When students check in with the Know Your Status campaign, they are not required to give their name. Instead, they are given a number, and when their number is called, they go back to see a test counselor in a confidential setting. After learning about the test, students who choose to have the rapid HIV test done will be required to complete a consent form, which will be filed in their medical record at the Duke Student Health Center. An oral swab is used to collect a test sample; no needle sticks are required. After the test specimen is collected, students receive their test results within approximately 20-30 minutes. Both positive and negative test results are filed in students' medical record. As with the confidential testing provided within the Student Health clinic, record of having the HIV test and confidential test results (both negative and positive) may be disclosed only with your written permission for insurance or employment screening. Positive results are reported to the State Department of Public Health as required by law.
