Parent

Why won’t you tell me what’s wrong with my kid?
Confidentiality laws and the newly implemented HIPAA regulations prohibit us from sharing information with you without the student’s written consent, even if you are the provider of medical care for your student. If your son or daughter gives us permission to discuss care given, we will gladly speak with you. You will be notified if your student is severely ill or injured.
My family insurance has changed. What should I do?
Call the Student Health business office at 919-681-2389 to give us the new information. Also make sure your son or daughter has the new card and remind him/her to always bring the insurance card to appointments at the Student Health Center.
I have forms from my insurance company certifying my child is a full time student. Where do I send them?
Send them to the Registrar’s Office, Box 90054, Durham, NC 27708
My child’s allergist won’t give me his serum; he wants to send it to you. What do I do?
Tell the allergist to send the serum to your son or daughter. We have found inconsistencies within the Duke Medical Center mail delivery system that make proper refrigeration problematic if shipped to Student Health. Make sure your son or daughter refrigerates the serum and brings it to Student Health as soon as possible.
My child got some Immunizations after we sent his forms in. Where do I send them?
Fax to 919-681-2874 or mail to Box 2899, DUMC, Durham, NC 27710. Mark it to the attention of the immunization coordinator.
My child has the flu/ is hurting badly etc., and I’m 3000 miles away, what do I do?

First, please try not to panic. Then have your son or daughter contact us and arrange an appointment. If he/she is unable to drive and friends are not available, Duke Police will transport him/her. If it is after clinic hours, have him/her call the nurse advice line – 966-3820 or go to the emergency department. (Remember that the ED visit is not covered by the Health FEE. Tell your student to take his/her INSURANCE card to the ED or Urgent Care.)

Have your student sign a release of information form so the health care providers can talk to you. Confidentiality laws prevent us from discussing your students care without his/her permission.

My child needs an Air conditioner/ Single room/ Special Housing. How do I get this processed?
You can download a special housing request form from this website. Provide all the requested information and fax it to us. Approvals are made based on medical need. Approval/denial will be communicated to your son or daughter via his/her Duke email account.
My child’s special housing request was rejected, what do I do now?
Appeals can be made by faxing additional information to the Student Health Center – 919-681-2874.

There is a charge on my child’s Bursar account. What’s it for?
Ask your son/daughter. Confidentiality laws prevent us from telling you without his/her  written permission.  If your son/daughter can't tell you what the charge is for, ask him/her to contact us directly.
Can I make my own appointment with a specialist at Duke?

Yes, you can. Make sure to have your class and activity schedule when you call.

Because of Duke Medical Center’s prominence, the waiting list for new patient appointments can be months long. If you have an urgent problem you should schedule an appointment at Student Health first. We may be able to facilitate the appointment with the specialist.

I need a dentist. What should I do?
We have a partial list of local dentists who welcome Duke students. You can call one of these offices, or check the Yellow Pages.
