Current programs
Let’s Talk About Sex
Everyone knows that sex happens on campus, but we don’t always talk openly about it. In this laid back program, we try to open up the discussion to review sexual health topics including safer sex options, testing for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, contraceptive options, sexual communication, and more.
Outercourse: Intimacy without Intercourse
Sex is sex, right? Wrong. In this program, we discuss the multitude of sexual activities that students may choose to participate in, highlighting those things you can do with a partner that don’t put you at risk for disease or unwanted pregnancy, don’t violate your own values, and don’t put either partner at risk for hurting one another. This interactive (and usually hilarious) program provides an open forum to discuss all the sexual options one has, from simple touching to intercourse, from physical to non-physical, from mild to wild, and gives potential risks and safety issues for each.
What Works for You? Understanding Birth Control Methods
When most of us think about birth control, we think about the pill. But what are your other options? This program will provide an overview of different contraceptive methods available, including birth control pills, the Patch, the NuvaRing, Depo Provera, male and female condoms, and emergency contraception. Presenter(s) will have sample products so that students can see different methods, and students will have ample opportunity to ask questions about the pros and cons of each method.
Are you Positive? Understanding STIs and testing options at Student Health
Chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis – these can be scary words if you don’t know how to protect yourself. This program helps students understand how sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are spread, how STI testing works, what treatment options are out there, and how to protect yourself. This program will also include a discussion of the prevalence of STIs among college-aged adults and recommendations on who should be tested for which diseases.
Safe and Sultry: How to Please Yourself and Your Lover
Can safe sex also be sexy? In this workshop, we seek to reclaim the fun and joy that comes with being sexual while practicing safe sex. The program provides specific information on how to prevent unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of sexually transmitted infections, while also covering safer sex techniques for men and women in heterosexual and same-sex relationships. This program includes an interactive activity with explicit discussions of various sexual activities, including manual stimulation, vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex, and the safer sex supplies that can make sure these activities are safe and sultry.
Getting What You Want: Building Healthy Relationships and Sexual Decision Making
Rather than just reviewing how to protect yourself when hooking up, this program really digs deeper to examine key components of a healthy relationship and explore techniques for effective communication within a relationship. This program can include an active discussion of how sexual activity can be a healthy part of such relationships when both partners are educated about preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and pregnancy and all sexual activity is consensual. This program can also provide a forum to discuss the benefits of abstinence and what’s required to make abstinence work.
Sex Jeopardy
Sex Jeopardy tests your knowledge of STDs, birth control, and general sex information. This is a fun activity where if you don't know answers, you can still learn from the information. The Healthy Devils are there to help you answer the Sex Jeopardy questions as well as any other questions you may have that may arise. Don't forget to answer in the form of a question!Health is a Great Wealth: Women’s Health Basics
This basic program is a must for all Duke women. The program provides students with a comfortable environment to ask questions about women's health. Topics may include: annual gynecological exams, self breast exams, contraception, PMS, testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), yeast infections, and emergency contraception. It’s a great way to get reliable information about your body and your sexual health options in a relaxed setting.
